Gender-transformative education (GTE) is a framework for dismantling the systemic inequalities that hold back girls and marginalised groups in Pakistan’s schools. It goes further than equal access: GTE challenges the social norms and power dynamics that perpetuate gender inequality, embedding equality into everything from policy to classroom interaction. This primer outlines the key initiatives, persistent challenges, and future pathways for making gender equality a lived reality in Pakistan’s education system rather than an aspiration on paper.

Key highlights/findings

Getting girls enrolled isn’t enough. gender inequality lives in the curriculum, the classroom, and how teachers teach.

Poverty and social norms work together. When families can’t afford school costs, girls are the first to be pulled out.

Most schools still lack separate toilets and boundary walls basic safety conditions that directly affect whether girls stay in school.

Teacher training programmes exist, but traditional teaching habits keep reinforcing gender stereotypes in practice.
